The lamps used during Jesus' time were made of clay. This lamp will be filled with olive oil, and a wick will be added to the oil, which will then be lit. This lamp would give light to the single living area of the home.

When you look at this lamp, it appears so small; how can it provide enough light for a living area so you can see? I have a question for you. Have you ever been in a room that was pitch black? I mean, it was so dark, you put your hand right in front of your face and you couldn’t see it. I have. We then brought a little cigarette lighter into the room. Once we lit the lighter, we were amazed at how that little light gave us the ability to see so much.
